FREQUENTLY ASKED

About A-Series Patio Doors

Everything you want to know about Andersen® A-Series Patio Doors.

How do I know if I need to replace my patio doors?

Signs include performance issues (sticking, not sliding smoothly, not closing securely, drafts, difficulty locking), aesthetic concerns (faded or doesn’t match your home), and visible damage (rot, warping, cracking, damaged glass). Early recognition saves money on energy bills and future maintenance.

What are the A-Series replacement patio doors made out of?

Frames use a wood core with a fiberglass exterior for rigidity and low maintenance, plus a one-piece fiberglass sill for superior water management. Panel stiles/rails are engineered LVL for strength; interiors are premium wood veneer (pine, maple, vertical-grain Douglas fir, oak, mahogany, or cherry); and exteriors use the Flexacron® electrostatically applied paint system.

What’s the difference between the contemporary and traditional panel styles?

Traditional has a 10 1/2" bottom rail and traditional glass stops. Contemporary has a 6 1/4" bottom rail and contemporary glass stops, giving more glass area for a sleek, modern look. Functionally, both are identical.

What’s the difference between a French-door patio door and a sliding glass patio door?

French doors hinge on the sides and swing open. Sliders glide on a track without using floor space. The A-Series offers both, and you can recreate a traditional look with grilles on a sliding door. Only sliding doors can take a footlock; hinged A-Series can take a Yale® smart lock.

What are the advantages to a sliding glass door?

Maximum light and views; space savings (it doesn’t protrude into interior or exterior space); and an optional footlock for security in closed or partial-open positions.

What are the advantages to a French door?

Available in inswing or outswing; double operable panels create a wide opening for superior airflow; an A-Series five-point locking system for security; and a Yale® Assure Lock® smart lock upgrade is available.

Are A-Series patio doors energy efficient?

Yes. ENERGY STAR® certified configurations are available, with select configurations named ENERGY STAR® Most Efficient for 2025. Dual- and triple-pane glass options with various coatings, and professional installation ensures no air infiltration.

Are there different glass options available?

Yes. Dual-pane options include Low-E4®, Low-E4® with HeatLock®, Low-E® Sun, Low-E® SmartSun, and Low-E® SmartSun with HeatLock®. Triple-pane options include Low-E4®, Low-E4® Enhanced, Low-E4® Enhanced with HeatLock®, Low-E4® Sun, and Low-E4® SmartSun Enhanced with HeatLock®.

Can I get blinds between the glass with an A-Series patio door?

Yes, in a wide variety of configurations with Low-E4® tempered glass and any exterior or interior color. Choose white or slate-gray aluminum blinds. Benefits: no cords for pets or children, no dust collection, and easier cleaning.

Are the A-Series replacement patio doors secure?

Yes. Tempered glass and the Andersen® reachout locking system are standard. A six-pin key cylinder lock is optional, the Yale® Assure Lock® Keyless Lock is available for A-Series hinged, and an auxiliary footlock is available for sliding doors. A Stormwatch® PG upgrade is available for coastal areas.

How long does it take to replace a patio door?

Most replacement jobs are completed in as little as one day, depending on the number of doors, crew size, and structural complexity.
